EXCERPT:

“I don’t know what I’m going to do now Lori. I really needed that job. My car stalled three times just driving it home. Plus, I still have bill collectors trying to collect from funeral expenses and a few other debts. Ya, I know I shouldn’t have to be responsible for my parents debts. You try to convince them of it, not me. I talked to them tell I was blue in the face. Yet here I am still responsible. I sometimes wish I had been in the car with them. It would have made things a lot easier on me.” Noel finished walking up the steps to her apartment. She had the cell phone in one hand and a bag of much needed groceries in the other.

“Yes, I am listening. I know. I shouldn’t talk like that. And that I am lucky to still be living. Oh crap, hold on a second, there’s an envelope taped to my door.” Holding the phone to her ear with her shoulder, Noel quickly looked around to make sure no one was watching her. She then reluctantly untaped the letter from the door then quickly shoved it into her bag of groceries. She then proceeded to unlock and open the door. She then slammed it shut with her right foot after entering. The twenty steps it took to get to the kitchen counter felt like she was walking in mud. Each foot step harder to take. Her mind was going in a million directions as she pondered what the landlord had to say that was so important she had to put it in writing. Finally setting the bag of groceries on the counter, she hesitantly retrieved the letter from the bag, then just stared at it, hoping that it would just vanish or self destruct.

“NOEL, HELLO are you there...what is it? What is happening? NOEL, talk to me, you are really worrying me.” Lori kept yelling through the phone, trying to get Noel’s attention.

“What, oh ya, sorry, I kinda forgot you was there.” Noel gave a nervous laugh as she grabbed the phone with her other hand. Still holding the letter out like it was ready to burst into flames, she pulled out the bar stool and sat down.

“Well, what does the letter say? Who is it from? Come on don’t keep me hanging.” Lori’s curiosity had gotten the better of her. “Maybe you won a million dollars in the Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes, and Old Lady Morris is holding the check for you. Would you just hurry and open it already, it isn’t going to bite, you know.”

“I don’t have a good feeling about this, Lori..I don’t want to open it, I can’t..it’s like my hands have a mind of their own and won’t cooperate with my brain. Or... maybe they know something I don’t know, and they are trying to spare me the pain and torture.”
